Ending in Line with George R.R. Martin’s Vision
Bran becoming king was, at the very least, something intended by Martin. But should we surmise that all the major story beats of Season 8, from the destruction of King’s Landing, to Jon’s exile, to Sansa becoming Queen in the North and even Arya sailing west in search of adventure were also in his original outline? Will Martin’s upcoming books, The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring, end in the same way? Benioff and Weiss said in a 2014 interview with Vanity Fair that Martin revealed to them the basic outline of his planned end for A Song of Ice and Fire, including each character’s ultimate fate. Martin himself was somewhat cagey on whether his books will conclude in the same way, saying in a blog post after the finale:
How will it all end? I hear people asking. The same ending as the show? Different?

Well… yes. And no. And yes, and no, and yes, and no…..
The Winds of Winter
As for the specifics of those yeses and nos, we won’t find out for sure until The Winds of Winter is finished. (Possibly as early as Summer 2020, as Martin revealed in a recent blog post.)
One thing is certain: Martin has no intention of rushing his saga to completion, and he’s committed to giving the rich and fantastic world of A Song of Ice and Fire the sendoff it deserves. Here’s hoping that we all live to see it happen.
