It’s been an exciting few months for The Expanse. Fans were left reeling after SyFy cancelled the show prior to airing its third season. SyFy’s loss was Amazon Prime Video’s gain, however, as the streaming service picked the show up for its fourth season. Between the San Diego and New York Comic-Cons, we’ve learned details and a release date (December 13) for Season 4. Now we have confirmation that the show will live on for Season 5, as well.
The Expanse returns for Seasons 4 and 5
Showrunners excited fans with a recent tweet in which they confirmed that not only will there be a Season 5, but that production has already begun, as well. The nineteen-second video shows a production sound stage in which they raise a Rocinante flag to the cheers of the crew. You can watch the video from the official The Expanse Twitter account below.
Amazon Prime Video is certainly all-in when it comes to the fan-favorite science-fiction drama. Based on author James S. A. Corey’s novel series of the same name, The Expanse chronicles the adventures of captain James Holden and his crew. They uncover the secret of the protomolecule, an alien substance, and are forced to cope with its effect on the galaxy.
Season 4 of the show picks up after an eight-month time jump from Season 3, and will focus on the Ring Gate and the worlds beyond. Tensions remain high between Earth, Mars and the Belt. The three remain on the brink of all-out war while Holden and crew must travel beyond the gate to Ilus. There they must investigate possible alien ruins and assess the safety of the colony there.
As tor.com points out, it’s likely that Season 4 of The Expanse will fall in line with the fourth book of the novel series, Cibola Burn. Thereafter we expect Season 5 will follow course and adapt Book Five, Nemesis Games. Beyond that….
All episodes of The Expanse, Season 4 will be available to stream December 13, 2019.
