From Superman to The Witcher, Henry Cavill has made a splash bringing beloved IPs to life. Now, he’s set to dive into a new iconic fandom: Voltron. Cavill will officially headline the upcoming Amazon MGM feature adaptation of the popular anime.
The Voltron series followed a team of teen space explorers who pilot a giant super robot (known as Voltron) and aired in the 1980s. The show drew on several Japanese anime TV series from Toei Animation; season 1 featured the “Lion Force Voltron”, which adapted the series Beast King GoLion. Season 2 featured “Vehicle Team Voltron”, which adapted Armored Fleet Dairugger XV.
Voltron: Defender of the Universe was the top-rated syndicated children’s show for two years during its original run. Following its success, the franchise expanded with three follow-up series, comic books, toy lines and collectible merchandise, and video games.
In the feature, Cavill will join previously announced star Daniel Quinn-Toye. Rawson Marshall Thurber will direct the Voltron film, which Ellen Shanman scripted. Currently, plot details for the feature remain under wraps. So, check back to THS for more updates.
Cavill’s recent film credits include The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare and Argylle. He also made a cameo in the Marvel Studios hit Deadpool & Wolverine.
